about

I had a dream in 1997 about when I was a little kid, in bed trying to sleep, listening to music coming from the living room. It was being played on either the piano or the record player. The music was so sad I wept. I do believe this happened, more than once as a little kid in real life. So, I woke up and transcribed the melody, still ringing in my head, note for note. In the fall of 2004 I got around to recording Alone on a Swing based on this 'dream melody '. For reasons unknown, I performed it much slower than it was supposed to be performed. Oh well. I once described this piece as "a sadness which knows no end". (Note: I played this recording for my sister when she was in town for Christmas that year, and she said it sounded almost exactly like a Chopin piece. She hummed the melody for me and yes, it indeed sounded very close. Could 'it' have been 'that piece'?)
