about

In late 1994 Laurence got distracted and put his NOVELTY SHOP on hold. He felt the need to revisit his older songwriting style and began to write and record new material (later released in the collection 'Catch Your Death of Romance'). By December of that year, GORDON GIGANTIC was formed. In January, this post punk rock three piece began recording seven songs, finishing in February and releasing five on their self-titled cassette release in spring 1995.

May 1995 review;
“…if there is any one greatest injustice on the local music scene, it’s the fact that Laurence Miller, the guiding force behind this five-tune release, isn’t world famous by now. From the original lineup of Destroy All Monsters, to his other-planet ravings of Larynx Zillion’s Novelty Shop, Miller has proven to be another one-of-a-kind performer of world-class talents and brains…”
Alan Goldsmith AGENDA

The GORDON GIGANTIC sound was in fact much like a combination of NONFICTION and THE EMPTY SET, two bands which Laurence had been involved with in the 1980's. Sadly, this band was a short lived one year experience, performing just twice before losing their bassist. They added a 2nd guitarist for a short period of time but never found a replacement bassist. Presto. Done deal.

ORIGINAL OF BAND NAME; Gordon Gigantic was the fire chief for the city of Detroit who was dismissed in 1994 after speaking out about the poor handling on devils night with the fires that ensued. Gordon was let go of by drummer Tony Archer’s surrogate uncle, Dennis Archer, the former mayor of Detroit. (This collection was originally released under the radar as a self-titled cassette in 1995 with only 5 of these songs.)

Special Thanks to the following guys;
Khalid Hanifi for loaning me his Tascam 388 eight-track tape machine (the only type ever manufactured that runs on ¼ inch tape!) to digitize the master tapes.
Jim Roll for baking the master tapes.
Chris Gooseman for repairing the machine when the belt gave way.

If it were not for them, this project as with many others of mine could not have been digitized and mixed.
